Tesco Mobile Will Pay You £36 a Year To Use This App

Tesco Mobile is already pretty cheap, in fact one of the cheapest mobile phone networks on the UK market but they are now offering all their customers a chance to save even more money on their monthly mobile phone bills. £3 per month to be exact. If you’re interested in making this saving of £36 a year then all you have to do is download an app and install it on your phone. But of course, when something sounds too good to be true you know there is a catch.

The catch is that their customers will get a cheaper phone bill each month BUT this is in exchange for seeing adverts on the unlocked screen of their phone. Tesco Mobile has partnered with a mobile platform to place ads on phones and the ads will come from companies like  Doritos, British Airways and McDonalds. This offer is called “Tesco Xtras” and will initially only be available to Android users. It will later be available on Windows’ phones but not available on the iPhone, because the iPhone’s operating system is incapable of allowing this type of functionality. The move has surprised many because Tesco Mobile is 50% owned by O2 who are considering whether to offer ad-blocking technologies.

If you are interested, then you can access this £3 / month discount by downloading the app called “Tesco Xtras”, load it up and then start using it. The adverts will only show up when your screen is unlocked but you could just decide to leave your phone unlocked and ignore the ads?

What About The Potential Extra Data Costs?

My first thought, upon hearing this was, “yeah, that’s all well and good but what about all the money it will cost me in data charges?” Well it turns out that Tesco Mobile have thought of this and have got you covered. If you decide to opt in to this offer then you will also receive an extra 200MB of data a month to cover any extra data used by the app.

Chief executive of Tesco Mobile, Anthony Vollmer says,

“This innovative new service is a UK exclusive and we’re excited that our customers get to benefit first from this new technology.”

When asked about its part owner O2’s consideration to offer ad-blocking technology to it’s users, Vollmer said  it did not contradict Tesco Mobile’s new venture. He claims that it is all down to customer choice because people can choose whether or not this is a service they want and it is not forced on anyone. It is the customers choice to download and install the app or they could choose to install ad-blocking software instead. He also pointed out that no other mobile phone network is offering their customers the choice of reducing the mobile phone bills in exchange for viewing ads.

My Opinion?

If you are already with Tesco Mobile, locked into a contract and don’t mind the ads then this is a great way to save £3 a month. However, there are many cheaper phone networks out there and you won’t have the hassle of ads intruding on the enjoyment of your phone.

For instance, the best SIM only deals are hands down from places like FreedomPop that gives you free, yes that’s right FREE monthly mobile phone usage and this is normally 200 mins 200 texts but (at the time of writing this) you can use this link to get 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 1G of data for £0/month. No contract – and you can cancel at any time. Read details and reviews about Freedom Pop mobile phone network here or get the SIM card before the offer ends by clicking here.

Other mobile networks that give you low prices are Giffgaff who start monthly charges at £5/month.
